Vozinha, The Goalkeeper Who Stunned Spain, Nearly Toppled Messi’s Argentina, and Played While His Mother Couldn’t Afford a Visa

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the most remarkable and inspirational stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 40-year-old, whose real name is Josimar Dias, comes from Cape Verde, a small island nation off the coast of West Africa with a population of only around half a million people. The 2026 tournament was the country’s first-ever World Cup appearance.

Vozinha did not turn professional until the age of 25, and spent his career moving between clubs in Cape Verde, Angola, Moldova, Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovakia, far from football’s biggest stages.

That changed in the team’s opening match against Spain, a former World Cup winner packed with stars who have won titles at Europe’s biggest clubs. Vozinha made seven saves to secure a 0-0 draw and was named Player of the Match, becoming the oldest player ever to feature in a nation’s first World Cup match. He broke down in tears at the final whistle, revealing that his mother could not attend because the family could not afford the cost of a US visa in time. She was later granted a visa and joined him in Miami for the next match.

His fame exploded overnight. His Instagram following jumped from around 50,000 to over 22 million within 20 days and yet increasing, making him one of the breakout stars of the tournament.

Cape Verde’s fairytale run nearly reached new heights, where his team came close to knocking out Lionel Messi’s Argentina, the reigning world champions and one of the most decorated teams in football history. Vozinha made eight saves, including a stunning stop from a Messi free kick, before Argentina escaped with a 3-2 win in extra time. Cape Verde left the tournament without losing a single match in 90 minutes, and Vozinha finished with 18 saves, among the most of any goalkeeper at the World Cup.

His journey, from a tiny island nation to standing firm against two of the world’s greatest football teams, has made Vozinha’s story one of the most inspirational success stories in World Cup history.
