Skeleton in a Wetsuit’ Found in Libya May Be Missing Italian Kitesurfer.
BENGHAZI – A body believed to be that of Italian kitesurfer Mimmo Piepoli washed ashore on a beach east of Benghazi, more than two months after he went missing in the waters off southern Italy.
The remains, described as a skeleton in a wetsuit, were recovered by volunteers from the Libyan Red Crescent’s Tokra branch and transported in coordination with local authorities. The body was handed over to the relevant authorities to complete legal procedures and conduct DNA testing to confirm the identity.
Piepoli’s disappearance prompted an extensive search by the Italian Coast Guard, which deployed a helicopter and divers to cover a wide area. The search later expanded to include authorities in Greece and Albania.
An experienced kiteboarder from Erchie on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Piepoli leaves behind a wife and two children.
The Red Crescent said the recovery was carried out according to established humanitarian procedures that preserve human dignity, regardless of nationality, race, or religion. The organization praised its Tokra volunteers for their swift and professional response
