BENGHAZI – Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces in Eastern and Southern regions, received Ibrahim Kalin, Head of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT), and his accompanying delegation at the General Command headquarters in Benghazi.
The visit comes shortly after the visit of Egypt’s intelligence chief to Libya, reflecting renewed engagement by key regional actors with Libyan stakeholders. Alongside Egypt, Türkiye remains one of the most influential external players in Libya’s political landscape, with a significant role in political, security, and economic affairs.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation in various fields. They also reviewed the latest developments in Libya and ongoing political efforts aimed at unifying state institutions, stressing the importance of advancing these efforts to achieve long-term stability and regional security.
TRIPOLI Libyan authorities in Western region have issued a warning over certain practices seen at some social events, including “Al-Tarshiq,” a tradition where money is thrown at performers and sometimes stepped on.
Officials said such actions disrespect the value of money and go against the laws and social values of Libyan society. A number of folk artists were called in, informed about the legal consequences, and warned that repeating these practices could lead to legal action.
Authorities stressed that everyone’s rights are protected by law, but anyone who promotes or takes part in these activities will be held responsible. They also called for cooperation between citizens and security institutions to help stop these behaviors
SIRTE – The city of Sirte witnessed a major official visit by Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, accompanied by senior officials from Eastern region government, including Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, Prime Minister of the Libyan Government Dr. Osama Hammad, and Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund Engineer Belqasim Khalifa Haftar.
Sirte, known as the hometown of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has experienced some of the most turbulent chapters of Libya’s modern history. The city suffered heavy damage during the 2011 civil war and later became a stronghold for ISIS militants, which led to further conflicts and widespread destruction. In the years following the fall of the previous regimes, Sirte remained heavily ignored & affected by instability.
Today, under the current Eastern-based Government, the city is witnessing a renewed wave of reconstruction and development projects aimed at reshaping its future and restoring its infrastructure.
The visit focused on reviewing ongoing reconstruction and development work in Sirte, where officials highlighted more than 200 projects being implemented through the National Development Authority, a key development Institution Under Eastern region government to improve infrastructure, public services, and urban planning.
During a ceremony held at the Sirte Conference Complex, a new package of strategic projects was announced, including the Khalifa Medical City, a major integrated healthcare complex, the Sirte Central Oncology Hospital, a new oncology center in Sabha, and the Ben Jawad Accident and Maternity Hospital.
Additional projects include the new headquarters of the Central Bank of Libya in Sirte, the Sirte International Equestrian Track, the Green Mountain International Stadium, and the Imam Malik Mosque project. The plan also covers the expansion of the Sirte water treatment plant to increase capacity, along with a strategic oil depot aimed at strengthening fuel supply and energy security in the central region.
Officials described these projects as part of one of the largest development initiatives the city has seen in decades, presenting them as a broader effort to rebuild infrastructure, improve services, and reinforce stability and economic activity in Sirte and surrounding areas.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry says “positive progress” was made in indirect talks between US and Iranian officials in Doha. The talks, mediated separately by Qatari and Pakistani officials, focused on issues related to a memorandum of understanding, including Iran’s frozen assets.
US President Donald Trump described the meetings as “very good.”
In related developments, a foreign container ship ran aground in the Strait of Hormuz after entering shallow waters outside a designated shipping route. Separately, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said Israel’s control over the Gaza Strip “will only continue to grow” until it reaches “100 percent.”
JD Vance says Iran has agreed to allow nuclear inspectors back into the country – a key demand of the international community – with discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) happening “as soon as today”.
The US vice-president said a great deal of progress had been made after the first round of talks between the US and Iran to reach a final deal to end the war, echoing a statement by mediators.
He said teams had discussed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and “de-confliction for the regional ceasefire”.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last week includes a commitment to re-opening the strait and the ending the fighting on “all fronts” – including Lebanon.
In a joint statement released earlier on Monday, mediators Qatar and Pakistan said that after the first round of talks, the US and Iran had agreed to “a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days”. Vance described the talks as having laid a “very good foundation” for negotiations towards a final settlement.
Speaking in Switzerland on Monday morning, the vice-president said the nuclear issue was “probably the one we’re most excited about as Americans”.
“[This] is a major milestone for the American people and a first step in permanently… ending a nuclear weapons programme in Iran,” he said.
Iran has always insisted that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.
JD Vance said the Iranians didn’t walk out. He said there was a little bit of threats, a little bit of whining, that they threatened to walk out but didn’t actually walk out.
I don’t think it really matters. I think it shows that there has been some real progress here, but the process is still very delicate and fragile.
There is a process that can now be a structure for the negotiations. The technical talks continue, and there are various mechanisms in this process that if there’s a problem, then they will get to the problem straight away, resolve it without it derailing the whole process.
He mentioned the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon as particular areas where they are going to focus.
The 14-point US-Iran framework agreement embodies the “spirit of equality”, adheres to the goals of the UN Charter and is based on the norms of international relations, China’s Foreign Ministry quoted Wang as saying.
Implementation of the deal will help consolidate the “hard-won” ceasefire, open new prospects for improved Iran-US relations and contribute to restoring peace in the Middle East, he added.
“As Iran’s comprehensive strategic partner, China has always maintained a fair and objective stance, supports all efforts conducive to peace, supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and national dignity,” Wang said.
He also praised Tehran’s efforts to improve relations with Gulf nations and other regional states. Nezami, meanwhile, expressed appreciation for Beijing’s political support, according to the Iranian embassy in India.
